I know that you are way better at Newspapers.com searching than I am, so I have a bit of a small request: about 2 weeks ago I updated the page for the Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville restaurant chain to add the date of the original opening in Key West, FL. Turns out the original Margaritaville was originally a souvenir store and only became a restaurant somewhat later in time. The earliest mention I could find of it being a restaurant was in the May 29, 1986 issue of The Naples Daily News. The article is about how, apparently, Buffett did not trademark the usage of "Margaritaville" in the context of restaurants fast enough, and as such a budding restaurateur in San Carlos Park, Florida was allowed to take it first. I searched Florida newspapers as best I could but could not find any mention of it being a restaurant prior to the publication of that article, nor any article about its conversion to a restaurant. Thanks for your help! wizzito | say hello! 15:31, 16 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

I spent a lot of time digging this up, @Wizzito. My current research has me narrowing it down to October 1987 to March 1988. The article you really need is in NewspaperArchive, terrible OCR and all: https://newspaperarchive.com/other-articles-clipping-mar-30-1988-4927689/ Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 17:56, 16 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Odd, considering the May 1986 mention (before 1987 and 1988) of it being an eatery. wizzito | say hello! 00:07, 17 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

SNL 50 and WDIV

edit

Hi, Sammi I was told by @Mvcg66b3r if you can review my entry that i made on WDIV'S wiki article, its about the SNL 50 situation where WDIV cut away from the special 13 minutes before it was over. Thank You. JAV317 (talk) 22:30, 17 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

@JAV317 I think a better question to ask is this. Is one 13-minute automation failure notable enough to receive coverage sufficient that it belongs in the encyclopedia entry of a 75-year-old TV station? My answer is no. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 23:29, 17 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
I disagree, Wikipedia is used to archive what happens with these stations and their notable events, if you diagree with me, then you should also be against whats on KTXL-TV wiki and how it has the time they did the same with Miss Universe 2015. JAV317 (talk) 00:35, 18 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
and KCRA-TV having a section called "Notable Incidents" JAV317 (talk) 00:57, 18 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Those are the two Sacramento network affiliates I haven't rewritten, @JAV317. When I get to them, that content will be handled differently. The KCRA notable incidents section and the KTXL controversy section contain some content that belongs in those articles, but not all of it (certainly not the Miss Universe error!), and not under that organization where it's basically a WP:CSECTION violation. That sort of content only belongs in the article in truly exceptional circumstances (e.g. KVOA's Super Bowl incident).
Your comment evinces I think a bigger difference from the way I see things. Wikipedia isn't a bulletin board where every broadcast station foible merits undue placement in an article. I've clipped articles like [1] and [2], but I'd never use them in an article. But things that result in real, sustained controversy merit treatment, in proportion with their importance to their subject, up to cases like KTTL where the controversy at hand is the article's driving force. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 01:35, 18 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ok, that was my biggest concern was that my entry was deleted while there was similar things on other Wikipedia pages, but what about the part where the Detroit Free Press talks about how SNL didn't air its first 2 season and instead they aired on WKBD-TV. Can that go on the Programming preemptions? JAV317 (talk) 02:01, 18 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
@JAV317, correctly done articles don't have sections like that (except KSL). Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 02:16, 18 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Re: Template:Infobox television station dual

On Milwaukee PBS, the city appears twice, in the header and its own field. That's important when two stations share the same city of license. Also there's no doc page like in Template:Infobox television station. You might want to get help with this new template. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 04:50, 18 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

I hadn't yet gotten around to writing up documentation @Mvcg66b3r, but I can certainly do so. Thanks for catching the double city bug. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 05:43, 18 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

DYK approval

Hi Sammi Brie, thank you for reviewing Template:Did you know nominations/Edward Cridge. I am new to the DYK process -- when you mark something as approved, does it automatically update the "passed" parameter to "yes" after a period of time, or does that have to be manually done to approve the hook? WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

edit

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. "Hi Sammi Brie, my article Hostile Government Takeover was moved to draftspace, but I believe it meets Wikipedia’s guidelines. Before resubmitting, could you take a look and let me know if any changes are needed?" Admittedly I made some stupid mistakes when I tried to remove a redirect that was placed on the article since I wanted it to remove the redirect but still keep it in google search results. I promise though for now when a page move is placed on a page that causes a redirect I will either ask for the page to have moves protected or I will use the nodirect edit on the original page and allow the new page to be indexed by google.
